Boston Modernizes Orange Line Ahead of Schedule
Boston's Orange Line returns March 7 after nine-day shutdown for digital signal upgrade
Orange Line Resumes March 7 After Signal Upgrade
Boston's Orange Line returns to regular service March 7, two days ahead of schedule, following completion of a major digital signal system upgrade. The MBTA finished installing new Integrated Vital Processing Interlocking technology and Audio Frequency Track Circuits across the entire line during a nine-day shutdown between Back Bay and Forest Hills. Phillip Eng, Interim MassDOT Secretary and MBTA General Manager, oversaw the accelerated project completion. The new system will improve scheduling reliability and operational efficiency for riders.

World Cup Deadline Met With Early Completion
The signal upgrade fulfills the MBTA's commitment to complete major improvements on the Orange and Red lines before World Cup matches begin this summer. The modernization project was originally awarded in 2018 but was prioritized and accelerated under Eng's leadership to meet the international event deadline. Transit officials said the new digital signaling system will handle increased ridership during World Cup events while providing more reliable service for daily commuters. The early completion demonstrates the agency's ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects ahead of schedule.
Speed Restrictions Removed, Multiple Projects Advanced
Crews completed permanent rail repairs near Ruggles during the shutdown, removing a 10 MPH speed restriction that'll allow trains to move more efficiently through the area. Workers also advanced Phase II of the Ruggles Station Improvements Project and continued the Jackson Square Station Accessibility Improvements Project. Platform repairs were finished at Stony Brook, and station cleaning and maintenance were performed throughout the shutdown area. The MBTA maximized the nine-day suspension to complete multiple infrastructure improvements beyond the primary signal system work.

Service Returns With Enhanced Reliability
Regular Orange Line service resumes March 7, 2026, with the new digital signal system operational across the entire line. The Integrated Vital Processing Interlocking technology and Audio Frequency Track Circuits represent a significant technological upgrade from the previous system. Transit officials said the improvements will increase operational efficiency and scheduling reliability for riders. The accelerated completion minimizes disruption for commuters while delivering essential infrastructure modernization.
Riders Can Track Real-Time Service Updates
Orange Line riders will benefit from improved scheduling reliability and faster travel times with the speed restriction removal near Ruggles. The signal system upgrade and infrastructure improvements completed during the shutdown will enhance service quality for daily commuters and visitors arriving for World Cup matches this summer.
