Boston-area commuters can ride MBTA Commuter Rail trains free after 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve, transit officials announced Friday. The agency will hold last trains after midnight at Boston terminals to give riders extra time to get home from celebrations. Free service won't apply to Stoughton, Foxboro, and Fairmount lines, officials said.
Safety Initiative Follows National Transit Pattern
The free rides are part of efforts to promote safe transportation during New Year's celebrations, according to the transit agency. Transit systems nationwide offer similar holiday service to reduce impaired driving during high-risk periods. The MBTA has provided free New Year's Eve Commuter Rail service in previous years as an annual tradition. Officials didn't provide ridership projections for the special service.
Nine Lines Included in Extended Service Plan
Nine of the MBTA's 12 Commuter Rail lines will participate in the extended service with free rides. The three excluded lines—Stoughton, Foxboro, and Fairmount—operate on different schedules that don't accommodate late-night service extensions. Officials didn't specify exact departure times for trains held after midnight, though they'll be available at Boston terminals. The agency typically releases detailed timetables closer to special events.
Weekend Schedule Set for New Year's Day
Commuter Rail service will operate on a weekend schedule Jan. 1, officials said. Weekend schedules typically feature reduced frequency compared to weekday service. The MBTA didn't announce when regular weekday schedules will resume after the holiday. Subway and bus service will run on regular schedules both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
