Transit agencies nationwide offer similar programs on New Year's Eve to reduce drunk driving incidents and provide reliable late-night options. The MBTA has provided free Commuter Rail service on New Year's Eve since at least 2022, making this the third consecutive year for the safety initiative. Chris Dempsey, Director of Transportation for Massachusetts, said free transit on New Year's Eve is a smart public safety investment that encourages people to leave their cars at home.
Service Details and Line Exclusions
Free fares apply to all Commuter Rail lines except three routes that won't participate in the extended service. The Stoughton, Fairmount, and Foxboro lines are excluded from both the free fare program and extended late-night service, officials said. Last trains departing from Boston on participating lines will be held after midnight to accommodate passengers celebrating in the city. The MBTA hasn't released ridership projections for the free service, and the cost of the program wasn't disclosed.
Implementation Begins Tuesday Evening
The free Commuter Rail service starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, and continues through the last trains after midnight. Regular subway, bus, and ferry service will operate on a weekday schedule throughout New Year's Eve, officials said. Passengers should check specific train schedules in advance, as departure times vary by line and station.

Commuters using the Stoughton, Fairmount, or Foxboro lines need to make alternative arrangements, as these routes won't offer extended service or free fares.
