MBTA Activates Fare Gates at South Station
Boston commuters now need valid tickets before accessing train platforms at South Station. The MBTA activated fare gates at the major transit hub December 30, transit officials confirmed. The change affects approximately 200,000 daily passengers who use the station's commuter rail, subway, and bus services.

Part of Broader Fare Enforcement Effort
The fare gate installation is part of the MBTA's Fare Transformation program launched in 2023 to modernize fare collection across all transit modes, according to the transit agency. Officials said the gates aim to improve revenue collection and reduce fare evasion. The MBTA hasn't publicly disclosed the cost of the fare gate installation at South Station. Transit agencies nationwide have been implementing similar systems to strengthen fare enforcement, with New York's MTA and Washington's WMATA using fare gates at major stations for years.
New Boarding Process Requires Advance Payment
Passengers must now validate tickets or passes at fare gates before reaching platforms, ending the previous practice of purchasing tickets onboard trains. The MBTA stationed staff throughout South Station to help riders adjust to the new system during the transition period. The number of fare gates installed wasn't specified in the announcement. Officials said all riders boarding trains must pay fares in advance, though the agency hasn't released projections for how the gates will impact revenue recovery.
Implementation Follows Holiday Announcement
The MBTA announced the fare gate activation December 27 via social media, giving riders three days' notice before the December 30 implementation. Phillip Eng, General Manager and CEO of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, oversees the fare modernization efforts. The agency hasn't announced whether fare gates will be installed at additional MBTA stations or provided a timeline for potential system-wide expansion.

What Riders Need to Know
Commuters should purchase tickets or load passes before arriving at South Station to avoid delays during their commute. Station staff remain available to assist passengers unfamiliar with the fare gate system. Riders can check real-time service information and plan trips accounting for the new boarding process through Moovit's transit app.
