Amtrak Adds Faster Acela Trains to Boston Route

Amtrak's new Acela fleet enters service in late August with 27% more seats and top speeds of 160 mph, officials said. The upgraded trains will operate between Washington and Boston, offering more frequent departures than the current fleet. Stephen Gardner, Amtrak President and CEO, said the trains provide a faster and more comfortable way to travel between major Northeast cities.

Major Upgrade After 25 Years

The new fleet represents the first major replacement of Acela trains since the service launched in December 2000. Amtrak ordered 28 trainsets from manufacturer Alstom in 2016 as part of a $2.45 billion investment in Northeast Corridor service. The trains began testing in September 2023 after delays from an original 2020 launch date. Transit officials said the upgrade addresses growing demand as ridership recovers to pre-pandemic levels, when Acela carried 3.5 million passengers annually.

Speed and Capacity Improvements

Each new trainset seats 386 passengers, up from 304 in the current fleet, according to Amtrak. The 160 mph top speed marks a 10 mph increase over existing trains, though officials haven't quantified specific travel time reductions between city pairs. The trains can reach 186 mph but infrastructure limitations on the Northeast Corridor prevent them from operating at maximum design speed. Amtrak announced more frequent service with the new fleet, though specific departure counts weren't disclosed.

Service Starts Late August

The new Acela trains will begin passenger service in late August 2025, officials confirmed, though a specific date wasn't provided. The trains feature enhanced amenities including personal power outlets, USB ports, improved WiFi, and more spacious seating. Gardner said the 27% seat increase will help meet growing demand for high-speed rail service on the corridor.

What Riders Need to Know

Passengers traveling between Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Providence, and Boston will benefit from the faster trains and additional capacity. Officials said detailed schedules will be released closer to the service launch date. Joseph Schwieterman, Director of DePaul University's Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, said the new trains will help Amtrak compete more effectively with air travel on Northeast routes.
