Bluebikes Raises Prices for Non-Members in Boston

Boston's Bluebikes bike-share program raised prices for casual riders while keeping membership rates unchanged, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council said. Non-members now pay 33 cents per minute for e-bikes, up from 25 cents, and the unlock fee for trips up to 30 minutes rose to $3. Day passes with unlimited rides increased to $11.99 from $10. The changes come as the program expands under a new five-year contract with Lyft and 13 participating municipalities.

Ridership Growth Drives Expansion

Bluebikes ridership has increased by 35 percent since 2021, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council said. Mayor Michelle Wu highlighted that Boston has invested in a 40 percent expansion of the Bluebikes network over the past two years to meet growing demand. The program aims to achieve 9 million annual trips by 2031. The expansion reflects broader trends in urban bike-share systems, where increased ridership often necessitates both infrastructure investment and pricing adjustments to sustain operations.

Network Adds 200 Stations and E-Bikes

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council revealed plans to introduce more than 200 new and replacement stations across the region. The expansion includes the addition of electric bikes, with the first 100 new e-bikes rolling out in April. Officials didn't specify which municipalities will receive the new stations first or provide a detailed timeline for the full rollout. The e-bike additions will increase the program's electric fleet, though officials haven't said what percentage of the total fleet will be electric once expansion is complete.

Five-Year Contract Extends Through 2031

The new five-year contract with Lyft and 13 participating municipalities extends the program's operations through the end of the decade. Officials didn't disclose the contract's financial terms or specify which municipalities are participating beyond Boston. The agreement includes provisions for the station expansion and e-bike deployment, with implementation beginning in April.

Safety Initiative Launches With Education Programs

Bluebikes will lead regional road safety efforts through a new safety and education initiative, including more than 60 community events annually and quarterly bike education classes. The program aims to improve cycling safety across participating municipalities as the network expands. Riders can track Bluebikes availability and plan trips using Moovit, which provides real-time updates for bike-share systems.
