Birmingham Routes Detour for Road Resurfacing
Birmingham bus routes 61, 63, and X21 detour overnight April 16 for Bristol Road resurfacing
Bristol Road Closes for Resurfacing Work
Riders using three Birmingham bus routes will face detours overnight Thursday as Bristol Road in Selly Oak closes for highway resurfacing work. The closure affects the stretch between Harborne Lane and Weoley Park Road from 7pm to 5am on April 16, transit officials said. Services 61, 63, and X21 will follow alternative routes during the 10-hour closure period.

Overnight Work Minimizes Disruption
The overnight closure schedule aims to reduce impact on daytime commuters and businesses along the busy corridor, according to the transit agency. Bristol Road serves as a major arterial route connecting Selly Oak to Birmingham city center and southwestern suburbs. Highway resurfacing projects typically involve milling deteriorated pavement and laying fresh asphalt to improve road conditions for buses and other vehicles. Officials didn't specify how long the resurfacing work has been planned or whether additional closure nights will be needed.
Three Routes Follow Detour Paths
Services 61 and 63 heading toward Birmingham will divert via Weoley Park Road, Gibbins Road, Harborne Lane, Chapel Lane, and back to Bristol Road. The same routes traveling from Birmingham will use Oak Tree Lane, Linden Road, Woodbrooke Road, and Bournville Lane before returning to Bristol Road. Service X21 toward Bartley Green will detour via Harborne Lane, Gibbins Road, and Weoley Avenue, with the reverse route applying for Birmingham-bound trips. Officials didn't say how much additional travel time the detours will add.

Single-Night Closure Scheduled
The road closure takes effect at 7pm Thursday, April 16, and will lift at 5am Friday, April 17, officials confirmed. Transit officials said passengers should plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time for travel during the closure period. The agency didn't indicate whether weather delays or other factors could extend the work beyond the scheduled overnight window.
Riders Advised to Check Routes
Passengers using the affected routes during evening and overnight hours should expect longer journey times due to the detours. Officials said riders should plan ahead for the temporary service changes.
