Arlington Adds On-Demand MICRO Transit Service

Arlington Transit riders can now book on-demand trips through a new microtransit service that replaces several low-ridership bus routes in northwest Arlington. The pilot program, called Arlington Microtransit or MICRO, launched this month with app-based and phone booking options, transit officials said. The service operates within boundaries formed by North Glebe Road, Langston Boulevard, and the county line, connecting riders to Virginia Hospital Center, the Westover neighborhood, local schools, and Metro stations.

Service Replaces Low-Ridership Routes

MICRO was designed to replace Arlington Transit bus routes that had steady but low ridership, according to the transit agency. The on-demand model allows the county to maintain service coverage while improving efficiency in areas where fixed-route buses weren't attracting enough passengers. Transit agencies nationwide have increasingly turned to microtransit pilots as a way to serve lower-density areas more cost-effectively than traditional bus routes. The service is operated by Via, a public transit contractor that specializes in shared-ride technology and matches riders traveling in similar directions.

Fares and Free Trial Period

Rides cost $4.50 per trip, with reduced fares of $2.25 available for seniors, persons with disabilities, and K-12 students, transit officials said. The discounted rate also applies to trips starting or ending at Ballston or East Falls Church Metro stations. Riders can get six free rides until May 13, 2026, as part of an introductory promotion. The service can be booked through a mobile app or by phone, connecting passengers with regional transit, local hubs, or specific addresses within the designated northwest Arlington service area.

Pilot Runs Through Fiscal Year 2027

The pilot is funded by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and Arlington County through fiscal year 2027, according to transit officials. Arlington County will use the pilot project to collect and evaluate passenger feedback to potentially expand microtransit to all of Arlington County. Officials didn't specify what ridership or performance metrics would trigger a countywide expansion. The pilot period will allow the agency to assess whether the on-demand model can effectively serve areas beyond the initial northwest Arlington zone.

Rider Information and Updates

The service currently operates only in northwest Arlington, though officials said they're evaluating potential expansion based on pilot results. Riders in the service area can book trips to connect with Metro stations, medical facilities, schools, and other destinations within the designated boundaries. Arlington Transit said it will monitor ridership patterns and gather feedback throughout the pilot period.
